How to remove VHB Tape correctly
VHB tape is an industrial-strength bonding tape which is often used as an alternative to screws or other methods of fixings. However, the main drawback of VHB tape is that it can damage surfaces if it is not removed in the correct manner.
There are a variety of techniques you can use to remove VHB Tape safely. Here are a few methods you could use.
Technique One – Adhesive Removers:
If your VHB tape is stuck to a delicate surface such as glass or vinyl, then the most effective method of removing the tape is by using commercial adhesive remover.
Since the delicate surfaces attract grease and other sticky substances, adhesive remover would be an ideal choice as it removes sticky remnants with ease. A good example of a commercial adhesive remover is WD-40.
So, what will you need to do?
1) Spray WD-40 over the tape and the surrounding area and leave it to soak for a few minutes. If the tape is attached to a vertical surface, grab a towel, and soak the solution into it and use the towel to wipe away the residue.
2) After a few minutes, grab a small knife or any other thin product to peel away the tape.
3) Once you have got most of the tape off, use soapy water to clean off any traces of both the tape and WD-40 and then use a towel to wipe the surface dry.
Technique Two – Heat:
On most surfaces, heat is a great way of removing VHB Tape as you are dissolving the tape’s adhesive. However, this may take a bit longer to see any results.
So, what will you need to do?
1) Using a hair dryer or heat gun, blow hot air on the tape, especially focusing on the edge of the tape.
2) Once you start to see the edges lose its stickiness, slowly remove the tape whilst continuing to blow hot air onto it. You may benefit from using a thin product such as a knife to peel away the tape as it will be hot.
3) Finally, use soapy water to clean off any traces of the tape and then use a towel to wipe the surface clean.
Technique Three – Water and a Towel
Another solution can be as simple as applying water and a towel to the VHB tape. The purpose of doing this is to soak the tape and make it lose its sticky properties.
So, what will you need to do?
1) Grab a bowl of warm water and soak a towel in the water for a few moments.
2) Once you have soaked the towel, apply it to the area where the tape is and use a slow circular motion to ensure you do not damage the surface.
3) After a few minutes, use a small knife or any other thin product to peel away the tape.
4) Finally, use soapy water to clean off any traces of the tape and then use a towel to wipe the surface clean.
